The sea-monster Cetus. Each page of the Aratea has a poem on the bottom half, written by the 3rd century BC poet Aratus and translated into Latin by Cicero, describing a constellation. The constellation is drawn above the poetry constructed with words taken from Hyginus’ Astronomica. NOTE: red dots show where the stars appear in the sky. France, 9th century (cropped and cleaned).
