It depicts a bearded middle-aged man with staring eyes and a stern facial expression. The voluminous laurel wreath characterizes him as a priest. The physiognomy of the head is determined by broad cheekbones, a powerful jaw and eyes looking into the distance. These are directed upwards and have an incised iris and a pupil that is only flatly depressed. The mouth is drawn down at the sides; with the contracted brows and the nose-mouth folds, a grim mien is created. The hair is shown above the forehead in eight full sickle curls to the left; at the temples and above the ears it is arranged in broad, pointed tufts. Over and behind the ears they are unfinished. The hair mass on the calotte is only given in summary. The thin full beard shows a simple hatching, also the eyebrows. On the head there is a laurel wreath converging above the middle of the forehead and widening from the sides, the leaves of which are regularly offset. Laurel wreaths of the present form are attested for different groups of priests. Such wreaths are also worn by the famous porphyry tetrarchs of San Marco in Venice; a little later the jewel diadem becomes the dominant form. It is no longer possible to determine whether it was a high-ranking military man or official - perhaps a governor - who was portrayed as a member of a college of priests. The design with a thin full beard, strong strands of hair, a strict, unmoving facial expression points to Diocletian's time - occasionally the head is therefore associated with Emperor Diocletian himself.
