A photograph from 1897 showing Swedish balloonist S. A. Andree's attempt to reach the North Pole by air. The journey ended in tragedy when the hydrogen balloon failed and was grounded after a couple of days in the air. S. A. Andree (1854-97) and his companions, Nils Strindberg (1872-97) and Knut Fraenkel (1870-97), survived for three months before all three perished in the harsh Arctic terrain. The chance discovery in 1930 of the expedition's last camp yielded much information about their disastrous journey.
