Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, 1795

A painting by Joseph-Nicolas Robert-Fleury (1797-1890), of Philippe Pinel, chief physician of Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris, ordering the removal of chains from mentally-disabled patients in 1795. Pinel (1745-1826) is considered the founder of modern psychiatry. He was chief physician of Salpetriere from 1795 until his death in 1826.
