The Pontifical Gregorian University is a Jesuit university in Rome, Italy, and considered the first university of the Society of Jesus, founded in 1551 by St. Ignatius of Loyola himself and given the right to issue ecclesiastical degrees by Pope Paul VI in 1556. The university was named for Pope Gregory XIII, who encouraged the expansion of the university. The Pontifical Gregorian University has one of the largest theology departments in the world and counts over one-third of the current College of Cardinals and over 900 living bishops as university graduates; seventeen popes have either taught or studied at the university.
