Avebury, Megalithic Stone Circle

Avebury is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. Constructed over several hundred years during the Neolithic Age, the monument comprises a large henge with a large outer stone circle and two separate smaller stone circles situated inside the center of the monument. Archeologist Aubrey Burl believed that rituals would have been performed at Avebury by Neolithic peoples in order to appease the malevolent powers of nature that threatened their existence, such as the winter cold, death and disease.
