Harp Seal Pup

Harp seal pup. View of the face of a harp seal pup (Phoca groenlandica) resting in the snow. The pup has an insulating layer of thick white fur. Harp seals live on and around the ice packs of the Arctic. Their diet consists mainly of fish, shellfish and other sea creatures. Pups are typically born on large ice sheets far from the water, to provide protection. The pup is nursed for several weeks, and becomes independent after it is weaned. The pups' white fur is highly valued by furriers, and many pups are clubbed to death each year to satisfy the trade.
