Heart anatomy. 18th-century artwork showing the anatomical structure of the heart from the front and back. This artwork is from "Thesaurus Anatomicus", a work published in nine volumes (1701-1714) by the Dutch anatomist Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731). Ruysch was known for his used of embalming techniques to prepare anatomical works, and is thought to be one of the first to use arterial injections to aid preservation of detail. This copy is from the library of the Paris Faculty of Medicine.
