ANONYMOUS, GERMAN, 16TH CENTURY ?. Design for a Powder Flask

Design for a Powder Flask. Artist: Anonymous, German, 16th century ?. Dimensions: 7 5/16 x 10 9/16 in. (18.6 x 26.8 cm). Former Attribution: Formerly attributed to Wendel Dietterlin, the Elder (German, Pfullendorf 1550/51-ca. 1599 Strasbourg). Date: ca. 1540-90. Powder flask decorated with an all over pattern of strapwork. In the middle of the design Athena is shown as a victory goddess holding a palm branch. Two angels hold up a laurel wreath above her head. She is flanked on both sides by a seated (conquered) soldier who is part of a weapon trophy.
