Bass saxophone in B-flat

Bass saxophone in B-flat. Culture: American. Dimensions: L. 132.5 cm (51 3/4 in.). Maker: Elkhart Band Instrument Co. (ca. 1923-1928) successors to Ferdinand August Buescher. Date: ca. 1923-28.
Although saxophones were conceived as a family of instruments, as seen in Adolphe Sax's 1846 patent, the bass was the first to be made. The saxophone family typically ranges from sopranino to contrabass.
Bass saxophones were especially popular in jazz and dance bands between the First and Second World Wars.
Buescher was the first company to make saxophones in the United States.
