Tarpeian Rock, Rome, c1833. Artist: Unknown

Tarpeian Rock, Rome, c1833. A steep cliff on the southern side of the Capitoline Hill overlooking the Forum, the Tarpeian Rock was used as an execution site during the Roman Republic. Convicted murderers and traitors were flung from the top to their deaths, as were people with mental or physical disabilities, who were believed to have been cursed by the gods.
