Blueberry Pollen, SEM

Colorized scanning electron micrograph of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) pollen. The pollen is shed from pores in the anthers onto the bodies of bumblebees and solitary bees that vibrate the flowers. Honeybees do not sonicate blueberry flowers and rarely collect much blueberry pollen. Blueberries are native to the Eastern United States. Blueberries are related to huckleberries, rhododendrons, and azaleas. These plants also thrive in environments similar to the ideal blueberry environment, that is acidic soil. Image width: 71 micrometers. Magnification: 1408x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
