Model of the conjoined brains of Ladan and Laleh Bijani used by Dr. Ben Carson,2003. Creator: Unknown.

African-American neurosurgeon, author, and politician Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. (born 1951) served as the 17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 2017 to 2021. He was a candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 Republican primaries. This white plaster model shows the conjoined brains of twin sisters Ladan and Laleh Bijani who were joined at the head. Carson, a member of the surgical team that performed an operation to separate the twins, estimated that each sister had a fifty-fifty chance of survival. Unfortunately Ladan and Laleh died immediately after their complicated surgical separation. The veins in the brain are highlighted in a contrasting light blue-green color. Two (2) small holes are drilled into the bottom so the model can be mounted on a stand.
