Second World War / Greece / War Crime / Waffen-SS. Members of the 4th SS division Polizei Panzergrenadier (command of the SS-Hauptsturmführer Fritz Lautenbach) in a square in the village of Distomo in Greece, after the atrocities they committed among the population: 218 men, women and children were massacred. According to the Waffen-SS, it was an act of revenge following an attack by Greek partisans against the German occupiers, but an investigation opened immediately showed that Commander Lautenbach had exceeded orders. However, he was not convicted by court martial on the grounds that he acted with a sense of responsibility towards his men. The Distomo massacre took place on the same day as that of Oradour-sur-Glane in France, also committed by the Waffen-SS. Photo, 10.06.1944.
