French Quarter, New Orleans, Before and After Hurricane Katrina

New Orleans before (left) and after (right) Hurricane Katrina made landfall on August 29th, 2005. The flooded areas appear darker in the image. This view focuses on the historic French Quarter of the city, which spans 7 blocks from the Mississippi River inland and 14 blocks along the river. As can be seen here, the French Quarter largely escaped the destruction that hit other parts of the city. Around 80% of New Orleans was flooded, with thousands killed. The evacuation of all the city's 1.3 million residents was ordered on September 8th.
