Birds Attack Assyrian Army, 570 AD

A Persian miniature taken from the Siyer-i Nebi is a Turkish epic about the life of Muhammad, completed around 1388. The Ottoman ruler Murad III commissioned a lavish illustrated copy of the work. The calligrapher Lutfi Abdullah completed the work in 1595. The Kaaba was built by the prophet Abraham and his son Ishmael as a house of monotheistic wosrhip, but prior to the birth of Muhammad, it had been taken over by pagan Arabs to house their numerous tribal gods. In 570 AD, Abraha, the Christian ruler of Yemen marched upon the Kaaba with a large army, which included one or more elephants, intending to demolish it. Behind the elephants came of wave of cavalrymen. Black clouds appeared in the horizon and flocks of birds called Ababil carrying burning stones in their beaks. They hovered over the army and attacked it with the burning stones.
