Clapperton, Hugh (Annan ,1788-near Sokoto, Nigeria, 1827). British traveler. He was part of the expedition to the interior of Africa led by Dr. Oudney. Along with Denham found the kingdom of Bornu. He entered the walled city of Kano. He died of dysentery in Sokoto. Mtagata thermal waters. Engraving by C. Laplante. Coloured.
