Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934) German soldier and statesman. Recalled at the outbreak of the First World War, he first came to prominence at the age of sixty-six as the victor at Tannenberg in 1914. Chief of German General Staff from 1916, in 1919 he retired again but returned to public life 1925 and was elected second President of Germany. Hindenburg driven round the liberated Rhineland.
