Italy, Naples Museum, from Pompeii, Villa of the Mysteries, cubiculum 2, Arimaspian and Gryphon

Italy, Naples Museum, from Pompeii, Villa of the Mysteries, cubiculum 2, Arimaspian and Gryphon. The Arimaspi were a legendary people of northern Scythia. Many ancient Greek tales speak of their struggles with the gold-guarding gryphons in the Hyerborean lands near the cave of Boreas, the North Wind. In this Roman painting, a figure in Scythian clothing battles a gryphon (or griffin), a mythological creature with the body of a lion and the head, talons and wings of an eagle. The Schythian is trying to protect himself with his leather shield.
