Cleitus (Clitus) the Black (375-328 BC) was an officer of the Macedonian army led by Alexander the Great. He saved Alexander's life at the Battle of the Granicus in 334 BC and was killed by him in a drunken quarrel six years later. Cleitus was the son of Dropidas and brother of Alexander's nurse, Lanike. Alexander III of Macedon (356-323 BC) was a Greek king. In 334 BC, he invaded Persian-ruled Asia Minor and began a series of campaigns that broke the power of Persia, overthrowing King Darius III and conquering the entirety of the Persian Empire. Plutarch's Lives for Boys and Girls, 1900 (cropped and cleaned).
