Battle of Lagos, 1693. By Theodore Gudin (1802-1880). The Naval Battle of Lagos took place during the War of the League of Augsburg , in 1693 near Lagos in the Algarve. It pitted a French fleet, commanded by Tourville , against the Anglo-Dutch escort of an important convoy bound for the Levant and commanded by the English admiral George Rooke and the Dutch admiral Philips van der Goes.
