The 'I' of 'In principo', formed by St John (in the white habit of a Cistercian) and his eagle , which is shown digging it's talons into his eyes, nose, mouth and ears, symbolising the word of God being imprinted upon his senses. An example of Cistercian art. Dated 12th Century.
