Glacial Potholes in Susquehanna Riverbed, PA

Large glacial potholes in diabase rock (dating to the Triassic) are visible at low tide on the bed of the Susquehanna River below the Conewago Falls, Pennsylvania. Potholes most commonly occur in areas where there are ancient rocks with different resistances to erosion. Stronger pebbles fall into small cavities in stream bottoms and swirl, widening and deepening the cavities.
