Carl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786), apparatus for investigating gases: from his Abhandlung von der Luft und dem Feur, 1777 (Chemical Observations and Experiments on Air and Fire). Scheele probably obtained what he called 'fire-air' (oxygen) in 1772, two years before Priestley. 1: Experiment in which hydrogen combines with oxygen in the air. 2: Burning candle in limited quantity of air. 3: Apparatus for collecting oxygen 4: Ox bladder for collecting gases, 5: Bee placed in inverted jar over basil of lime-water. As long as oxygen last: bee will live, and carbon dioxide will be absorbed by lime-water.
