Mesopotamia is an ancient region lying between the Tigris and Euphrates, two rivers in todays Iraq. Around 5000 BC, the inhabitants of Sumer, an area in southern Mesopotamia, invented irrigation. Thanks to the mastery of irrigation, their land became more fertile, a wider variety of crops appeared and the population grew. Villages became towns that soon turned into city-states. In this way, the Sumerians formed the very first civilization, around 3500 BC.
