Base from a Purification Brazier

Base from a Purification Brazier. Culture: Tibet, probably Derge. Dimensions: H. 3 5/16 in. (8.4 cm); W. 4 9/16 in. (11.6 cm); Diam. 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm). Date: 15th-17th century. This brazier was used for burning sacrificial offerings during purification rites. The circle-on-a-square configuration is echoed in the fire-offering ladles displayed nearby. The base and the drum display a meandering lotus-flower decoration, the drum with four flaying knives in high relief. All the gold and silver decoration is damascened.
