LOUIS COMFORT TIFFANY. Design for an interior

Design for an interior. Artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, New York 1848-1933 New York). Culture: American. Dimensions: 20 7/8 x 18 1/2 in. (53 x 47 cm). Maker: Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company (American, 1892-1902). Date: 1892-1902. While Tiffany was famous for his Aesthetic-style interiors, this highly finished design for a Renaissance Revival interior shows his ability in other modes as well. Here, he presents a fully coordinated environment: note how the salmon color of the coffers is picked up in the strapwork-patterned wall covering, the leaded-glass windows, and even the lozenge border of the carpet. The windows, with their scroll-and-leaf motif, bear a resemblance to those Tiffany designed for the H.O. Havemeyer residence. The lower wainscoting has an Asian fret motif that recurs in other Tiffany designs.
