Storming of Badajoz, Spain, Peninsular War, 6 April 1812. British troops under the command of Arthur Wellesley (1769-1852) capturing Badajoz from the French, a victory which came at the cost of heavy casualties. The Peninsular War, fought from 1808-1814 is known in Spain as the War of Independence. Wellesley's victory in the war led to him being promoted to Field Marshal and made Duke of Wellington 1814.
