Oil painting of the CSS Shenandoah by Christian Poulsen, circa 1865. The Confederate States Cruiser Shenandoah, commerce raider, was the last armed ship to fly the Confederate flag. The ship was commanded by Captain James I. Waddell, 1824-1886, CSN. On August 2, 1865, Captain Waddell learned that the war was ended. The Shenandoah made her way to Liverpool, England, where she surrendered to British authorities in November, 1865. She was transferred to the United States and later sold to the Sultan of Zanzibar. The painting depicts the Shenandoah in the Bay of Melbourne, Australia, shortly after her arrival on January 25, 1865. Other ships in the harbor include (from left to right) Danish merchantman Dannevirke, privateer Shenandoah, British merchantman Great Britton, merchantman Elizabeth, and American bark Contest of New York.
