Otto von Guericke, German Scientist

Otto von Guericke (November 20, 1602 - May 11, 1686) was a German scientist best known for his work on the physics of air pressure and the vacuum. He invented an air pump designed to create a vacuum which he used in his most famous experiment. He machined two copper hemispheres, placed them together, and pumped the air out of the sphere. The force of the air pressure around this sphere was so great that teams of horses harnessed to either hemisphere could not pull them apart. Von Guericke's work disproved the long-held theory of 'horror vacui' ('nature abhors a vacuum'). The university in the town of his birth, Magdeburg, Germany, is named after him.
