JOHANN BERNOULLI

Johann Bernoulli.Born: Basel, Switzerland, 27 July 1667. Died: Basel, Switzerland, 1 January 1748. Swiss mathematician, and most renowned of the Bernoulli family, which is responsible for perhaps the most remarkable mathematical legacy in history. He was the brother of Jacob Bernoulli, and father of Daniel (the Bernoulli priciple's namesake). The family produced at least ten intellectuals of importance over three generations. Unfortunately, he was a controlling, petty, and jealous man, who saw his sons as rivals. His book Hydraulica is a plagiarization of his son Daniel's Hydrodynamica (1738). He was head of the mathematics department at Groningen University in the Netherlands. He is perhaps best known for his Bernoulli numbers, which made the development of Fermat's Last Theorem possible. From the collection of the NYPL.
